Colour Meets Clay | Organic Layers of Design

 |

Harlequin’s collaboration with designer and ceramicist Henry Holland is a meeting of creative minds, translating organic, textural ceramic forms into fabric and wallpaper designs that cocoon interiors in an earthy palette. Combining Harlequin’s obsession with colour with Henry's signature style in clay work, an effortlessly curated collection is revealed, blending ceramic craft with technical skill and mastery of the colour palette.

ENTER THE WORLD OF  HARLEQUIN X HENRY HOLLAND

Harbinger of all things cool, Henry Holland’s portfolio is as layered as his hand-built ceramics. From a career in fashion, he brought his playful creativity to the pottery wheel, a move that connected him ever closer to homeware and, ultimately, interiors.

LAYERS OF TECHNIQUE

Henry's passion for Nerikomi, a Japanese pottery technique, is a central focus for his ceramic studio in Hackney. Here, handmade ceramics and homeware come off the wheel, each unique, unphased by perfection, a counterpoint to his previous guise as a designer in the fast-paced world of fashion. Harlequin was immediately struck by this hand-turned exploration of ceramic slicing, which revealed the irregular forms of Nerikomi, and, once the collaboration was set in stone (or clay), it became an artistic reference point for this collection. Following chats around the drawing board, viewings from our UK fabric and wallpaper production lines and brainstorms that could shift seasons in their creative power, a collection was devised, inspired by Henry’s work and made real by the design team at Harlequin.

“From the initial concept stage to creating the full collection, the collaboration process was so much fun. Working with the team at Harlequin to explore the capabilities of mills, select fabrication bases, and work up a palette, we’ve created customised signature patterns that sit within a textural story. Seeing my work reinterpreted from a different perspective has been thrilling.”

TEMPTING TONES

“Henry is a creative talent whose artistic eye knows no bounds; from fashion to homeware, his distinct creative form translates beautifully across textiles, revealing themes that undulate and morph with each new creative encounter. His use of colour speaks Harlequin’s language. The collection palette is based on Henry’s ceramic shades, with glazed and unglazed options creating an organic and tonal palette for us to work from.”

THOUGHTFUL AND ORGANIC, WITH A HARLEQUIN TWIST

Twists of Terracotta, splashes of Atlantic, and copious amounts of Chocolate and Matcha ground the collection and elevate interiors.

From fabrics inspired by archival prints to deeply sumptuous embroideries and weaves rich in texture, interiors will be layered in irresistibly tactile designs that sit at the intersection of our design worlds; as Henry says, “I love Elsworthy as a twist on a classic fabric and a way of adding texture to something that still acts as a grounding plain within any room. I also love the Marble Tapestry, perfectly fusing the patterns we create through our ceramic work and added texture, resulting in such a comforting fabric when used in interiors.”

Wallpapers have been designed through a mix of techniques and processes. An experimental approach to these wallcoverings has culminated in a collection of versatile textures, mirroring how Henry works in his studio. From the momentous Marble panel to the ombre chevron of Southborough, walls are dressed in interpretive style.
